LIST THE BEFORE HE was known as the ‘Wild Thing’, Daly was known as ‘Long John’. He was branded with this nickname following his remarkable driving exhibition on the tight 7200- yard Crooked Stick layout. The American crushed drive after drive and backed up this dead-eye Dick accuracy with silky smooth touch on the slick greens. Daly only received entry into the field after Nick Price withdrew when his wife went into labour. The 25-year-old from Arkansas was a virtual unknown but, with the help of Price’s caddie, won the tournament by three strokes.
