Golf Australia Express : Issue 25
APARIS often good enough for a win. Even more so in a thrilling four-way three- hole playoff. And that’s how it panned out for 34-year- old American Angela Stanford, who outlasted China’s Shanshan Feng and Koreans Na Yeon Choi and Jenny Shin to win at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore. Although the veteran of 12-years on Tour won with rock-steady par play during the playoff, she would’ve preferred making a par at the 18th in regulation play to seal victory much earlier. In a dramatic conclusion, Stanford trailed playing partner Shin by a shot heading to the last hole when play was delayed for 90 minutes due to lighting. When play resumed Shin sprayed her tee shot out- of-bounds and went on to double bogey the final hole, while Stanford’s bogey ensured a four-way tie at 10-under. Stanford described her win around Tanah Merah Country Club—her fifth LPGA title and biggest of her career—as major-like. “Well, I haven’t won a major yet, so this is the closest thing so far,” she said. “The best players in the world are here and they call it Asia’s major, so it’s the closest thing to me. It’s a big deal.” Stanford collected $210,000 for the win.
